OMODA 5 2025 test drive: the best-seller gets a makeover to keep conquering the market

The OMODA 5 2025 arrives with two options that redefine the SUV concept: an efficient combustion version with a turbo engine, and the OMODA 5 EV, an electric model with a range of 430 km

The OMODA 5 has been one of the most prominent vehicles from Chery on the Spanish market, having arrived just 10 months ago. With its 2025 version, the brand aims to keep taking market share from its main rivals by offering a significant update in design, technology and performance. It is currently sold in only two versions, one combustion and one electric, but soon we will see the OMODA 7 and OMODA 9 on the Spanish market.

After a debut that left its mark and which we were able to test, and reaching a total of 5,800 units sold, this SUV has been updated to remain a highly competitive option, and we have had the chance to confirm it. Here is a preview: it will remain a best-seller. In this dynamic test, we tried the new, more powerful engine, its most technological interior, and we enjoyed the renewed exterior design.

Exterior design

Aesthetically, the OMODA 5 2025 has received the fastest facelift on the market, with changes that improve not only its looks but also its aerodynamics. The new aerodynamic appendages on the tailgate and the 18-inch alloy wheels give it a fresh aesthetic and sporty touch. They have also added roof rails as standard and two more parking sensors at the front, which improve both the functionality and safety of the vehicle.

In terms of equipment, the Comfort trim has been enriched with features normally found only on higher versions. The rear-view mirror with USB interface for installing a DVR, the rain sensor and the automatic high-beam assist are just some of the additions included without affecting the base price of 27,900 euros.

New, more efficient engine

One of the most relevant novelties of the OMODA 5 2025 is its new 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, which delivers 145 CV and 275 Nm of torque. During our test, the response was immediate, with smooth acceleration that reaches 100 km/h in just 10 seconds, though a slight delay is still noticeable when accelerating. Fuel economy has also improved notably, with an average of 7 litres per 100 km and reduced emissions of 159 g/km. This is one of the main reasons behind the reduction of 40 CV in power, which now makes it more environmentally friendly thanks to its Euro 6E approval.

The interior is also renewed with new software

The interior of the OMODA 5 2025 has been redesigned to offer a more intuitive and technological experience. The new 12.3-inch dual screen becomes the control centre, integrating both the infotainment system and the driving functions. With touch and voice controls, it is easy to manage everything from climate control to navigation, all through a clear and accessible interface.

The redesigned centre console with its floating design incorporates a wireless charging module and USB and USB-C ports. In this new version, the gear lever has been removed, so the optional sequential gearbox is no longer available either. In addition, the extra storage space adds comfort on long journeys, and all the climate control buttons, which in the previous version were located below the infotainment screen, have been integrated. In this petrol version they have added a new driving mode, the “Super Mode“, which lets the speakers play engine-simulating sound, while we can choose between three different display modes on the central screen.

Comfort and dynamics

The OMODA 5 2025 has been improved in many areas, and the best part is that they managed to do it in the shortest time possible while listening to consumer feedback. One of the most notable improvements concerns its dynamic behaviour, which has been enhanced thanks to new improved suspension and soundproofing, including double glazing on all windows. It is not a car with sporting aspirations, but it performs perfectly on winding roads and its ride comfort is remarkable.

The clutch has also improved; it now features a dual clutch and the gears engage somewhat better, with no hesitation at the start (there is still room for improvement). This SUV handles with surprising smoothness when absorbing road irregularities, but if there is one thing I did not like it is the brake, especially on the electric version, which I will discuss later, although the feel could also be improved. The balance between comfort, manoeuvrability and technology is one of its strongest points, as there is currently no car on the market that includes so much standard equipment for just 27,000 €.

OMODA 5 EV: The Electric Alternative

The OMODA 5 is also offered in a fully electric version, the OMODA 5 EV, which complements the range of this best-seller with a sustainable option without compromising performance. Equipped with an electric motor of 150 kW (204 CV) and 340 Nm of torque, the OMODA 5 EV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 172 km/h.

Its range of up to 430 km (WLTP cycle) makes it an excellent choice for both daily use and long journeys, maintaining a notable energy efficiency of 15.5 kWh/100 km. The design of the OMODA 5 EV follows the same elegant and modern style as the petrol version, but with slight adjustments to highlight its electric identity, such as a cleaner and more aerodynamic front end.

Technology and Premium Comfort

Like its combustion counterpart, the OMODA 5 EV features a high-end interior, with a 12.3-inch HD curved dual screen that integrates navigation, 360º cameras and driving assistants. The floating centre console includes 50 W wireless charging and USB ports, while safety is a priority with features such as adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alert and autonomous emergency braking.

The Premium version of the OMODA 5 EV raises comfort even further with details such as the 360º HD camera, panoramic roof, heated steering wheel, 8 SONY speakers and sporty front seats that are heated and ventilated or the rear seats that are heated.

T1X multi-energy platform

Both the combustion OMODA 5 and the OMODA 5 EV share the T1X platform, which allows Chery to offer a multi-energy structure without sacrificing interior space or performance. This platform, together with the new suspension, guarantees high levels of rigidity and optimised suspension on both axles, with a multi-link setup at the rear, ensuring comfortable and dynamic driving in any variant. In addition, the OMODA 5 EV keeps the same 380-litre boot capacity. As for dynamics, I prefer the electric version, where there is less body roll and a more immediate response from the accelerator.
