PSA has spent decades standing out for its diesel engines, units that have powered millions upon millions of vehicles around the globe. We all remember legendary engines from the brand, such as the famous 1.5d used by city cars 20 years ago or the 1.6 HDi, a more recent powerplant trusted by brands such as Volvo, Ford or Mazda.
However, times move on very quickly, and although the latest HDi engines more than met performance and consumption requirements, increasingly strict anti-pollution regulations are forcing manufacturers to reinvent themselves constantly in order to offer a good balance between performance and efficiency.
Less than three years have passed since September 2013, when PSA launched the first engines of the new BlueHDi family, the latest evolution of the HDi. From the very beginning they have managed to satisfy buyers’ demands, who have welcomed these engines very positively, just as they did with the earlier HDi and e-HDi.

7,000 BlueHDi diesel engines are manufactured every day
These engines, currently fitted to virtually every model in the Peugeot, Citroën and DS ranges, are produced at the French Trémery plant at a rate of 5,000 units a day for the 1.6 and 2,000 units a day for the 2.0. Today there are four mechanical options, split across two different displacements: 1.6 (with 100 and 120 CV) and 2.0, with 150 and 180 CV.
The main feature of these BlueHDi engines is their exhaust gas treatment, which in these powerplants is carried out by an oxidation catalytic converter (commonly called the catalyst), a particulate filter (DPF) with additive (urea) and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst.
PSA’s diesel engines, including the BlueHDi, are characterised by smoothness and the absence of noise in operation, making them some of the most refined four-cylinder diesels available. The BlueHDi currently fits the Citroën C3, C4, C4 Cactus, C4 Picasso and C5. At DS, they are found in all three models of the range, including the DS3, DS4 and DS5. In the lion brand, the BlueHDi extends from the 208 through the 2008, 308, 3008, 508 and 5008, not counting commercial vehicles.
