Sales of BYD remain below those recorded last year
BYD is facing a difficult environment in China. Nevertheless, its internationalisation strategy is offsetting part of the domestic decline and is allowing it to maintain a stable sales volume.
BYD delivered 321,123 new energy vehicles -pure electric and plug-in hybrids- in April 2026. That figure represents a slight increase of close to 7 percent compared with the previous month, but it is far below the figure recorded in April 2025, with a fall of 15.5 percent.
This data is especially worrying for the Chinese company, which has now posted eight consecutive months of year-on-year declines, placing it at levels similar to those of 2024 and far from the figures reached in the first half of 2025.

In the first four months of the year, BYD has sold 1,021,586 vehicles, surpassing the one-million mark. However, this volume is 26 percent lower than in the same period of 2025. The weakness of the Chinese market explains much of this trend. The first months of the year are usually slower because of the Chinese New Year, but on this occasion changes to subsidy policies have worsened the situation. Nevertheless, it is also true that other manufacturers have faced these same difficulties in the Chinese market with better results. In any case, and despite all of the above, the fact remains that BYD is still the world leader in electric vehicle sales.
BYD is thriving outside China
The main positive for the company has been its international expansion. In April, sales outside China reached a record 134,542 vehicles delivered to overseas customers, 71 percent more than a year earlier. Consequently, 41.9 percent of all vehicles delivered by BYD were sold outside China, a proportion that continues to grow.

Looking at the company’s various brands, BYD itself remains the most relevant, with 273,448 vehicles sold in April 2026. Fangchengbao, focused on personalised vehicles, recorded strong growth, reaching 29,138 deliveries. This represents an increase of 190 percent year-on-year and 12.4 percent compared with March. Denza, on the other hand, improved by 57.7 percent over the previous month with 11,250 vehicles sold, although it is still 26.9 percent below its April 2025 figure. Likewise, the luxury brand Yangwang sold 264 vehicles, 95 percent more than in March, but 14 percent fewer than last year.
