The new Ford Focus ST promises to accelerate faster than the previous RS

Ford continues to climb the ladder with the Focus ST, a model that arrives not only with more power than ever, but also with better acceleration capability than the RS

The performance compact segment seems to know no limits, something proven by companies such as Ford, who has just returned to the fray with the latest Focus ST. This variant has always been presented as the prelude to the more powerful and radical RS, but on this occasion the oval brand seems to have wanted to go even further with one of its entry-level performance models. This is because the new ST promises not only to be quicker than its predecessor, but it will accelerate faster than the previous RS, an unprecedented fact and a clear sign that the upcoming Audi RS3, Honda Civic Type R and Mercedes-AMG A 45 will have a powerful rival from America.

However, it is still early to talk about the characteristics of the next Focus RS, but the more restrained ST has already put its cards on the table. Thanks to the technology it inherits directly from exclusive and radical models such as the Ford GT, the new ST has managed to proclaim itself as one of the quickest in its segment.

From 0 to 100 in 5.7 seconds

Under the skin of this new Ford Focus ST lies a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine capable of producing 280 CV and 420 Nm of torque, figures that make the American compact start to climb towards the summit. Thanks to an innovative anti-lag system inspired by the one fitted to the Ford GT, and to flat-shift capability for the six-speed manual gearbox, the ST not only accelerates much faster but also delivers more intense sensations.

This engine is also able to collect the exhaust gases more efficiently to optimise the energy transferred to the turbine wheel, producing more power and delivering a faster boost pressure. At the same time, the anti-lag technology electronically keeps the throttle open for 3 seconds after the driver has lifted off the pedal, thus easing the reversal of airflow through the turbocharger to maintain the speed of the compressor wheel.

In this way, the Focus ST’s straight-line speed is matched by its cornering ability, offering a perfect balance. This is possible thanks to the electronic limited-slip differential fitted to the compact, which uses hydraulically actuated clutches to redistribute up to 100% of the available torque to the wheel with more grip and so prevent wheelspin.

Last but not least, we must mention the braking capacity of the new ST, which is able to surpass that of the all-powerful previous-generation RS. It features 330 mm front discs together with two-piston calipers of 44 mm diameter each. With this premise, we are looking not only at the most radical Ford Focus ST yet, more so than the previous RS, but also at a preview of the level of efficiency and precision that the forthcoming Focus RS will offer.
