This Is the Toyota Crown Sport: the Range's PHEV That Will Only Be Available in Japan

This version with a plug-in hybrid engine produces 302 CV and has all the sporty look its name suggests; it will only be available in Japan.

The Toyota Crown Sport has been unveiled and has shown us a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. This model already stood out for its elegance and attractive image. Now, it adds a PHEV engine to that package, along with a sportier setup and, above all, the ability to drive in pure electric mode.

As with the other versions in the range, it uses a 2.5-litre engine, although in this case it is combined with two electric motors powered by energy stored in the lithium-ion battery. This battery allows an emissions-free range of up to 90 km, which in Spain would qualify it for the DGT environmental label 0.

According to Toyota, with a full tank and a fully charged battery, the Toyota Crown Sport has a range of up to 1,200 km, a figure that is not bad at all. The battery can be recharged in about 5 and a half hours from a standard socket. With a fast charger, it reaches 80% in around 35 minutes.

The combined output of the three motors rises to 302 CV, compared with the 231 CV offered by the most powerful combustion-engine variant. For more spirited performance, the E-Four 4WD system has been added.

Chassis improvements

It should be noted that a plug-in hybrid electric car is heavier than a combustion-engine car. That is why, and to maintain the sporty look of the Toyota Crown, Toyota’s engineers have reinforced the floor of the car, where the battery is located. They have also adjusted the damper settings in the adaptive variable suspension system.

The 20-inch ventilated discs with six-piston brake calipers help maintain braking control with that extra weight. The PHEV model weighs 2,030 kg, while the hybrid version weighs 1,810 kg. Performance is strong thanks to the thrust provided by the two electric motors, so the extra weight is offset and the sporty spirit is maintained.

It is based on Toyota’s TNGA platform, and the characteristics of the plug-in hybrid engine allow the climate control to be used while charging. It also features bidirectional charging, so the battery can be used to power external devices and even supply energy to the home if necessary.

The exterior offers some differences, such as 21-inch wheels finished in black, with red brake calipers and badges identifying it as a plug-in hybrid model. Inside, the black and red upholstery stands out, with sports seats and red rear seatbelts that add a sporty touch to the whole.

The price of the Toyota Crown Sport has been set at 7,650,000 yen, which is roughly equivalent to 52,920 euros. And as we have already said, it is not available outside its country of origin, so we will have to live with the desire to see it on our roads.
