Audi unveils its new 190 CV 2.0 TFSI engine

The VAG Group is a regular participant in the Vienna International Motor Symposium and, as such, takes the opportunity to have one of its brands showcase a world-first novelty. In 2015, that role has fallen to Audi, which has announced the official details of its new 2.0 TFSI engine with 190 CV of power, on which it has been working for the past few months.
The engine will debut in the next generation of the A4, the B9, in late 2015. It has a displacement of 1,984 cubic centimetres and produces 320 Nm of torque across a broad rev range, from 1,450 to 4,400 rpm. According to Audi’s calculations, its combined-cycle consumption will stay below five litres per hundred kilometres.
This TFSI, which weighs 140 kg, incorporates a large number of innovations in various areas, beginning with an optimisation of the combustion process. Its greater efficiency is achieved through measures such as a reduced intake duration (the valve timing angle drops to 140°) combined with higher pressure, the earlier closing of the intake valve to reduce mean pressure, and a readjustment of the Audi Valvelift System variable valve lift system, which shortens intake duration at lower loads and lengthens it at higher loads (valve timing angle of 170°).
Audi has introduced other techniques to improve engine performance. For example: coolant circulation management has been revised so the engine needs less time to warm up, and a new low-friction oil, 0W-20, is adopted to contribute to that goal. Although the German brand does not specify it, this 2.0 TFSI is expected to replace the current 1.8 TFSI with 170 CV and to be available with more than one type of gearbox and drivetrain.
