Global recall of the MGS5 SUV by MG Motor

A problem detected under conditions of extreme cold can cause one of the vehicle’s components to overheat, with unexpected consequences.

MG Motor has recalled nearly 10 thousand units of its MGS5 electric SUV. The reason is a possible failure of the radiator fan in conditions of extreme cold. In very specific conditions, if the fan freezes and locks up, when the cabin heating is switched on the fan control resistor can overheat and, in the worst case, cause a fire.

The recall affects a total of 9,806 units of the MGS5 manufactured between 22 January 2025 and 29 January 2026 worldwide, of which 1,830 were on the road in Germany. The German transport authority (KBA) is monitoring this incident under reference number 16617R. According to this body, incidents causing material damage and even personal injuries have already been reported, although no figures or exact details of their severity have been provided.

Remedy on the way

To resolve the problem, MG Motor is preparing a software update for the IMCU that will prevent critical overheating in the circumstances described. For the time being, no specific schedule for the intervention has been announced. Internally, the brand is managing the campaign under the code RE005.

This is the most significant recall that MG Motor has carried out in Europe. Previously, a problem was detected with the driver’s seat anchoring mechanism, and another fault with the software of the engine control unit (ECM) of the MG ZS, which allowed nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions above legal limits.
