Koenigsegg Agera R 2013: 25 more horsepower and plenty of nanotechnology

The Koenigsegg Agera R 2013 is the ultimate supercar, making use of the most advanced technology in materials and traction control.

A few days ago, I was struck by a comment from one of our readers, in the post on McLaren P12, which asked whether this type of car is really necessary; cars like the Koenigsegg Agera R, which are more than sports cars, already surpass competition vehicles themselves with technology that reaches into the field of dedicated nanotechnology.

Besides the camshaftless V8 engine that we showed you not long ago, some more details about the 2013 model are known. Let’s start with the wheels, since they will be one-piece carbon fibre, the first wheels of their kind in the world. If a wheel and tyre from one of these cars can already reach exorbitant prices, imagine this wheel specially moulded for the Agera R.

Now let’s look at what the Agera R has to do with nanotechnology. This science, in addition to studying the control of matter at the nanoscale, studies the manipulation of atoms and molecules, completely changing the properties of the material. According to Koenigsegg, nanotechnology has been applied to some internal engine components such as the cylinder walls, to reduce friction and improve consumption. Nanotechnology may not be a last-minute advance (in fact it has already been used in the automotive field), but anything that can help inflate the price is worth it.

The engine has gained 25 horsepower over last year’s Agera R, now totalling 1,140 horsepower, which gives a power-to-weight ratio of 1.18 kilos per horsepower and a top speed of 437 km/h. Of course, all this horsepower will be managed by the traction control system, combined with the suspension developed specially for the Agera R by Ohlins Racing. The 2013 Agera R will be another one we’ll see at Geneva in a few days.
