Not one, not two, not three. Four turbos for the new BMW engine

BMW clearly relies, more than most manufacturers, on forced induction. The term downsizing is very fashionable these days, when anti-pollution regulations force engine displacement to be reduced in order to emit fewer emissions.

If manufacturers want to achieve good power and torque figures, they have no choice but to force air into the cylinders through forced induction, either by turbo or supercharger.

The Bavarian brand currently sells a three-turbo diesel engine reserved for the most powerful versions of its largest models, such as the X5 M50d. This trio of turbos feeds the 3-litre inline diesel engine, which produces no less than 381 hp.

We have now learned that BMW will replace this triple-turbo 3-litre engine with a four-turbo variant on the same block with identical displacement, called the “Quad Turbo”. The power output of the engine with its four-turbo setup rises to 394 hp, delivered between 4,000 and 4,400 rpm. Meanwhile, torque rises from 740 Nm to 760 Nm between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm.

It may seem like a very slight increase that will be practically imperceptible, but the reason it does not generate more torque is the 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. The engineers responsible for development are not confident they could guarantee its reliability if torque were increased much further. On the other hand, besides improving power and torque figures, BMW claims that consumption is 5% lower compared with the triple-turbo.

In theory, the first model to use it will be the BMW 7 Series xDrive 750D. This version of BMW’s flagship can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 4.5 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

We have no doubt that after its launch in the BMW 7 Series, it will extend to other models from the brand such as the X5 M50d and its twin brother, the X6 M50d.
