The world tour concludes with the Mercedes Class B F-Cell, and the conclusions are not encouraging

The hydrogen car does not have an easy time of it. But before you misunderstand me, let me say that the round-the-world trip made by the Mercedes Class B F-Cell has ended and, although from the car’s point of view it was a complete success, when it came to hydrogen refuelling it was pretty much a disaster.

And this is what has lit the fuse for a multi-million-euro investment in hydrogen infrastructure that the German company plans to make. With several experimental models running on hydrogen, Mercedes-Benz is preparing to invest “millions of euros” in technology and charging points, so that its cars have somewhere to refuel.

Daimler AG’s hydrogen infrastructure investment plan was already in place beforehand, although now the plan will not be limited to Germany alone, since the goal is to expand the network even further, covering more refuelling points on European soil and forming partnerships with other companies that are leaders in the field.

The sign that Mercedes will spend a lot of money from now on has been given by Dieter Zetsche himself, when he said that the development of the infrastructure has to accelerate from now on.

I don’t know what Daimler’s projections are regarding hydrogen, at a time when electricity seems to be the panacea. But they must be substantial, for there to be a risk of going much further with the hydrogen car. Not only investing in its technology, but also so that it has places where it can refuel.
