Jaguar XE: A revolutionary aluminium structure to reduce consumption

Jaguar has developed a technology to create a bodywork made from an alloy composed of 75% aluminium, which reduces the weight of the car and in this way also lowers consumption and CO2 emissions

Consumption and emissions of polluting gases are one of the major battles of car manufacturers. All of them seek ways to reduce them, so that users can save money and enjoy performance that doesn’t sacrifice power or the driving experience that one looks for in these cars.

Jaguar has been testing a new aluminium alloy for manufacturing its new bodyshells, and has now managed to produce the “skin” of the Jaguar XE with it. It is an alloy containing 75% aluminium, which goes by the rather unappealing name RC5754 and which has considerably reduced the weight of the car.

Jaguar has experimented with this type of material for years and is considered the world leader in its use. It has already used similar materials in the Jaguar XJ, XK and F-TYPE models. These are aluminium structures with very rigid, riveted joints. This technology, based on the aerospace industry, is the one now used, in an improved form, in the Jaguar XE.

The presence of 75% recycled aluminium in the bodywork has reduced its weight. This weight reduction allows the engine to work more efficiently and reduces CO2 emissions as well as consumption.

Consumption is rated at just under 4 litres per 100 km and emissions have been brought down to 100 g/km. In addition, the composition makes the car extremely light yet very strong. Jaguar engineers have sought to improve the strength of the material without compromising the design’s style or its lightness.

Using recycled material in the construction of the bodywork is one of the core principles the company is pursuing. Its goal is to use up to 75% recycled materials in each car by 2020, and this is where the brand’s research is heading.
