The new 2025 IONIQ 5 from Hyundai comes with a new design and greater range, among other improvements

Renew or die. Hyundai continues to periodically add some interesting improvements to this model so that it remains competitive against its rivals.

The South Korean manufacturer has just announced a series of improvements and a slight design change for the 2025 model year edition of the IONIQ 5. This renewal of the Hyundai electric car, based on the E-GMP platform, will arrive in South Korea this very month of March and over the following months throughout the year in other markets such as Europe.

The most notable improvement in the new IONIQ 5 is, without a doubt, the increase in battery capacity, which as a consequence will mean an increase in the vehicle’s range. Hyundai has opted to fit the same 84 kWh battery pack already seen in the IONIQ 5 N, replacing the 77.4 kWh pack that was fitted until now in the longer-range versions. The South Korean manufacturer now claims a WLTP range of up to 570 km on a single charge, compared with 507 km until now.

Since its launch in 2021, the IONIQ 5 has seen its battery pack capacity increase roughly every couple of years. The first electric Hyundai model based on the E-GMP platform debuted with a 72.6 kWh battery pack, which was increased to 77.4 kWh in the 2023 model year edition. Now, with the 2025 edition, its capacity increases once again, as we have already mentioned, to 84 kWh.

Thanks to its 800V architecture, the IONIQ 5 continues to shine at the charging point

Where there seem to be no changes, however, is in the supported charging power. Although the manufacturer has made no mention of this, the truth is that the IONIQ 5 N with the 84 kWh battery pack supports the same peak power of 240 kW as the original IONIQ 5, so we should not expect any improvement in this area. However, the charging curve is somewhat more favourable on the IONIQ 5 N, which makes it possible for raising the charge from 10 to 80 percent to take the same 18 minutes, despite the battery pack having a greater capacity.

The press release published by Hyundai does not make any reference either to the entry-level version of the IONIQ 5 with the 58 kWh battery pack, so we do not know whether its capacity has also been increased, even slightly, or whether it remains exactly the same. When Hyundai introduced the 77.4 kWh battery pack, this improvement was accompanied by an increase in the power of the IONIQ 5’s motors, both in the rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. On this occasion, however, we have no record of any improvement in this same respect.

The IONIQ 5 retains the character that makes it unique

As for the changes to the design of the new IONIQ 5, the truth is that they are quite subtle and you have to pay close attention to notice them. According to the manufacturer, the redesign of the front and rear bumpers reinforces the SUV appearance of the vehicle. This modification has made it two centimetres longer, reaching 4.66 metres, while the remaining dimensions — width (1.89 m), height (1.61 m) and wheelbase (3 m) — remain the same. Aerodynamics have also been improved through some slight modifications, such as the rear spoiler being five centimetres longer, or through the redesigned wheels.

Finally, let us mention the changes you will find in the interior of the new IONIQ 5. On this occasion the South Korean manufacturer has opted to integrate a series of physical buttons into the centre console to make it easier to access certain functions, such as heating and ventilation for the front seats, heating for the steering wheel, or activating the parking assistant. Likewise, as with the IONIQ 6, Hyundai has modified the steering wheel to integrate the four points of light that represent the letter H in Morse code. In this way, the driver will have a visual indicator, for example, of the battery charge level during a recharge.
