Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TDi 184 CV S-Tronic Quattro, road test (Engine, performance, handling and consumption)

A fun diesel with excellent dynamics and the security of Quattro traction: that is the Audi A3 Sportback we have tested, with an enjoyable combination. Under the bonnet sits the well-known 2.0 TDI engine in its most powerful version, delivering 184 CV, paired with the S-Tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive.
On the outside it is very eye-catching thanks to the S-Line trim and the alloy wheels typical of the sportier versions of the range, while inside we find a quality space with good fit and finish, as well as the greater practicality of four doors. In this first part we tell you everything about the engine, the dynamics of this A3 and its consumption.
Engine and performance

The engine chosen for this test is the traditional 2.0 TDI, which in its latest and most powerful version reaches 184 CV; it is the same engine used in the Golf GTD, for example. The 150 CV diesel version is more than enough to move the Audi A3 with ease, but the 184 CV add a more sporty touch without consumption being especially affected.
This powerplant responds from 1,500 rpm up to 4,000 rpm, with particularly strong pulling between 2,500 and 4,000 rpm. The torque is 380 Nm , available from just 1,750 rpm, while top speed is 230 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 6.9 seconds.
Mated to the engine is a dual-clutch gearbox that stands out for its speed and smoothness, with six ratios. And the icing on the cake is the Quattro all-wheel drive, ideal for areas with difficult climates where traction is needed alongside good tyres, or simply to enjoy driving with excellent grip and agile cornering.
Handling

The Audi A3 Sportback fits the Audi Drive Select, that is, a control that changes the car’s electronic settings to offer several driving modes (Efficiency, Comfort, Dynamic and Individual). These settings only affect steering firmness, gearbox behaviour and accelerator pedal response.
In Efficiency mode, we were surprised that when the car is coasting the gearbox literally goes into neutral, that is, it does not hold gear on prolonged descents and saves no more fuel, because being in neutral at those moments still consumes some fuel. In Comfort mode it works correctly and keeps the gear engaged, with greater engine braking.

We liked the good interior insulation, with a high level of comfort and good isolation from engine noise (although it is quite noisy) and from wind noise. The suspension does not become harsh over potholes or poor surfaces, but its firmness is noticeable.
The new MQB platform debuted on the Audi A3 when it launched in 2012. The truth is it does not disappoint, and the car has a high level of dynamism. Add a powerful turbo engine, Quattro traction and firm suspension, and the result is a fun car that sticks to the asphalt and with which you can indulge in some sporty liberties.
The steering is precise with variable weight, and the braking system stands out for its effectiveness. One detail that could be improved is the start/stop system, since there are currently ones that operate more quickly.
Consumption

On our usual route along the motorway, between Madrid and Vigo (and back), the Audi A3 Sportback averaged 5.7 litres per 100 km, a good figure considering it has all-wheel drive and 184 CV under the bonnet.
On country roads it hovers around six litres per 100 km, and after several runs on our usual route the figures were around 5.8-6.2 l/100 km. In town it is somewhat thirstier, but within the normal range, reaching 7.5 litres per 100 km on our usual route around the city of Vigo.
In the second part of the test we will analyse the exterior design, sporty thanks to the S-Line trim, as well as the interior and finish, and the boot.
