BMW promises advanced Level 2 driver assistance in urban areas by 2027
With this new technology, BMW takes an important step forward in the field of driver assistance.
From 2027, BMW plans to extend its Level 2 driver assistance beyond motorways and main roads. The Munich-based Bavarian brand is preparing an expansion of these functions into urban environments, allowing the system to assist with turns, roundabouts and junctions with priority, as long as the driver remains attentive and ready to take back control at any time.
The rollout will begin in Germany and will gradually extend to other countries. The new capabilities, guided by BMW Maps navigation, will cover not only motorways and secondary roads but also city centres.

Although the current urban assistant already stops and resumes moving at traffic lights, from 2027 it will handle more complex manoeuvres. With an active destination, the vehicle will position itself on its own in multi-lane roads, take bends and drive through roundabouts. It will also identify priority situations at intersections using its sensors.
The legal framework remains the same: Level 2 functions only operate while an interior camera detects that the person at the wheel is paying attention. This condition is based on UN Regulation No. 171 (DCAS Series 02). From 2027, these rules will for the first time allow systems to suggest and autonomously initiate manoeuvres in urban environments.

For the driver and the system to work together smoothly, BMW incorporates the Symbiotic Drive function. Thanks to it, assistance is not switched off abruptly if the driver turns the steering wheel, accelerates or brakes; the system adapts to the driving style. In emergency interventions, such as lane keeping, the sensors analyse steering wheel movement and gaze direction. The system only corrects the trajectory if the vehicle drifts unintentionally or there is a risk of collision.
All the relevant information appears on the Panoramic iDrive, beneath the windscreen. On the infotainment screen, a three-dimensional view summarises the route, the environment captured by the sensors and the systems active at that moment.
BMW models compatible with this technology
The hardware needed to enjoy these new capabilities will come as standard on the new BMW iX3, iX4, X5, 3 Series and 7 Series. Customers will therefore not be obliged at the time of purchase to add driver assistance capabilities. These functions can be activated later via OTA updates, probably under a subscription scheme.

BMW has not yet revealed how much it will cost customers to enjoy these advanced capabilities. In any case, and for reference, the most complete Level 2 packages available today range from around 1,000 to 5,000 euros depending on the model and the way they are purchased.
