MG Motor announces a new generation of plug-in hybrid vehicles with semi-solid-state batteries for 2027
Like many other Chinese manufacturers that initially began selling fully electric models in the European market, MG Motor is now firmly betting on plug-in hybrid models for the future.
During the Tech Day event held by the company in London, MG Motor unveiled its technology roadmap for the coming years, characterized by a strong push toward hybridization and automated driving. The British brand, controlled by the Chinese giant SAIC, has announced a new generation of plug-in hybrid vehicles, called Plug-in Hybrid+, which will incorporate semi-solid-state batteries and advanced driver assistance systems, with launches planned from 2027 onward.
The first MG Motor Plug-in Hybrid+ model will be the new MG ZS, arriving in 2027. Depending on the version, the plug-in hybrid system it incorporates will combine turbocharged petrol engines of 1.1 and 1.5 litres—with a thermal efficiency above 42 percent—with a new hybrid transmission capable of automatically switching between electric mode, hybrid mode and combustion engine depending on driving conditions. According to MG Motor, this combination will allow acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under six seconds.

At the same time, the British brand will introduce SolidCore semi-solid-state battery technology across all future Plug-in Hybrid+ models. These batteries promise greater energy efficiency, faster power delivery and more stable behaviour in low temperatures and at low charge levels. The first vehicles to be equipped with them will be three new families of SUVs in segments B, C and D.
MG Motor does not want to be left behind
On the other hand, regarding assisted driving, MG Motor has explained that it relies on data gathered during 1.2 million kilometres of testing in 24 European countries. By the end of 2027 the company plans to launch a new SUV equipped with the “Navigate On Autopilot” (NOA) system, which will allow, under driver supervision, merging onto motorways, changing lanes and overtaking. MG Motor is also continuing to develop automated parking functions and is already testing SAE Level 4 robotaxis in Europe, the Middle East and China.

This technological offensive is part of MG Motor’s European strategy. In June, the SAIC subsidiary announced the construction of its first plant in Europe, located in Ferrol (Spain), whose production will begin in 2028. Under the motto “In Europe, for Europe”, the company is developing its driver assistance systems specifically with European traffic data, adapting its offering to the needs and regulations of the continent.
Finally, it should be noted that the presentation focused mainly on plug-in hybrids and automation, so MG Motor did not detail its long-term plans for fully electric vehicles.
