OMODA 5 EV Test: a Chinese electric SUV at a very good price

We take the wheel of the 2025 OMODA 5 EV from Chery with 204 CV, attractive design and a range of 430 km, all from a competitive price of €33,242

Chery, the Chinese automotive giant, is looking to conquer the Spanish market with its updated OMODA 5 EV 2025. Almost a year after its arrival, this fully electric compact SUV reinforces Chery’s commitment to Europe. With comprehensive updates to design, performance and technology, the OMODA 5 positions itself as a serious competitor against rivals such as the BYD Atto 3, the KIA e-Niro or the Hyundai Kona Electric.

OMODA is a key brand within the Chery group, which this year will reach two million vehicles produced, of which 20% will be electrified. Spain has become its gateway to Europe, with a solid network of 75 dealerships by the end of 2025 and a spare parts warehouse in Guadalajara capable of delivering accessories in less than 24 hours, including the battery.

Design that catches the eye

The OMODA 5 EV 2025 retains the attractive and distinctive styling that characterises the brand, but incorporates new features that enhance its functionality. The new 18-inch alloy wheels, roof bars, lettering on the rear lights and additional sensors at the front reinforce its urban and modern character. Available in two trims, Comfort and Premium, and in a palette of seven colours.

In its base Comfort version, the equipment includes features normally found on higher-end ranges, such as rain sensors, high beam assist and a rear-view mirror with a USB interface for cameras. The Premium trim adds premium elements such as a Head-Up Display, SONY speakers and a power tailgate. All this without exceeding €40,000 in its best-equipped version.

An interior with little to envy

Inside, what stands out most is the dual-curved HD 12.3-inch screen that integrates navigation, driver assistance and 360º cameras with very good image quality. In addition, the floating centre console offers fast 50W wireless charging and USB-C ports. The Premium trim includes a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats with ventilation, and a heated steering wheel.

However, there are still some details to improve. For example, the climate control controls take up the entire central screen, which can make them difficult to use on the move, and access to certain functions such as deactivating driver assistance or regenerative braking itself requires navigating complex menus. We found touch buttons to adjust the volume on the left of and on the steering wheel, but none within reach of the passenger.

Very competent electric motor and range

It has an electric motor of 150 kW (204 CV) with 340 Nm of torque, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. Its 61.05 kWh battery guarantees a range of up to 430 km (WLTP cycle) and charges from 30% to 80% in just 28 minutes with a DC fast charger. For those who prefer the combustion engine, the petrol model offers 145 CV and a homologated consumption of 7 l/100 km.

Looking at its charging times, they are quite competitive and suit different needs. With a DC fast charger (80 kW), the battery can be recharged from 30% to 80% in just 28 minutes, ideal for long journeys. At home or at slow charging points of 11 kW, the same percentage is reached in around 3-4 hours, providing flexibility for everyday use. These charging times, together with its range of up to 430 km, make it a practical and efficient option for electric mobility.

Driving dynamics: a well-achieved balance

The dynamic behaviour of the OMODA 5 EV 2025 has been optimised compared with previous versions, thanks to several improvements to the T1X platform. This multi-energy structure can accommodate electric and combustion engines without compromising space or performance. The new suspension, together with double glazing on all windows, offers a quiet and comfortable ride, even on uneven terrain.

Although the main focus of this SUV is not sporty performance, it surprises with its agility and stability on winding roads. The steering, although somewhat soft, makes manoeuvres in town and parking easy, making it perfect for everyday use. However, those looking for a more direct driving experience might miss a slightly firmer and more direct setting.

Another notable point is the capability of the regenerative braking system, which could be more intuitive. Currently, switching between the three regenerative modes requires navigating the screen menus, a detail that reduces practicality. In normal driving, the braking system does its job, but it could offer better feel and retention capacity to make the most of the torque from the electric powertrain.

The smoothness in absorbing bumps in the road is one of the great virtues of the OMODA 5 EV, especially on long journeys. However, aspects such as the climate control setting in eco mode, which prioritises efficiency over thermal comfort, can be a limitation in winter.

Overall, the OMODA 5 EV combines notable comfort with dynamics that make it suitable for both urban journeys and road trips, achieving an appealing balance for an SUV in its segment.

Prices and financing

The OMODA 5 EV has a starting price from €33,242 with financing, including the MOVES III Plan incentives. Without discounts, prices start at €37,900 for the Comfort trim and €39,900 for the Premium. In addition, OMODA advances the €7,000 of MOVES III Plan incentives with interest-free financing for one year.
